David Stark is Arthur Lehman Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Columbia University where he directs the Center on Organizational Innovation.
His book, The Sense of Dissonance, is an ethnographic account of how organizations search for what is valuable. Supported by major grants from the National Science Foundation, Stark is 1) studying the social factors that contribute to creative success in jazz (approximately 400,000 musicians) and video game development (some 300,000 developers); and 2) examining attention networks among securities analysts (some 10 million analyst-firm observations). This Place, These People: Life and Shadow on the Great Plains, with photographer Nancy Warner, will be published in Fall 2013.
