Gay Hawkins is a professor of social and cultural theory and deputy director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. She is currently researching drinking bottled water as a new consumer practice and the ways in which plastic bottles have become market and public devices. She is also developing a follow up study on how plastic packaging became 'the skin of commerce' and a major urban waste problem.
